Key narrative

Air pollution in Laos is still not a priority for the Government, but neither is for many citizens

Through deep listening and collective sensemaking open burning of municipal and agricultural waste, vehicle emissions, industry pollution and transboundary haze were identified as the main sources of air pollution in Vientiane.

SIP in Vientiane aims to empower the community to collaboratively co-create solutions to mitigate the air pollution. Therefore, areas of opportunities identified are: waste management system (open burning, agricultural and industrial waste), infrastructure and transportation (public transport, EV, urban planning), transboundary actions (public awareness, transboundary haze).

To date the people powered portfolio in Vientiane has 40 interconnected initiatives within the 5 levels of intervention corresponding to these areas.  This portfolio is a result of collaborative work between the community, public and private sector, academia, developmental agencies, and local NGOs.
